I have installed the various software packages discussed on this site on three main platforms:
32bit Redhat Linux
64bit Redhat Linux
Mac OS X (on intel arch)
Those wishing to follow the process I used should start with the 32bit systems page, which gives a general overview of how I go about installing packages in general.
Those running 64bit linux then you should then read the 64bit systems page before installing anything.
Finally those using Mac OS X should read the Mac OS X page before installing anything.
